J. William Buchta
(1895-1966) born at Osceola, Polk County, lived in Lincoln.
Physicist, educator, administrator, editor, contributed broadly
to the improvement of physics teaching on the national level,
was instrumental in establishing the prototype of the National
Science Foundation summer institutes for high school and college
teachers of science, initiated the visiting scientist program
sponsored by the American Institute of Physics, recipient of
Oerstad Medal in 1957, served in various editorial capacities
for The Physical Review and for Reviews of Modern Physics from
1931 to 1957, was founding editor of The Physics Teacher in
