John R. Dunning
(1907-1975) born in Shelby, Polk County. Nuclear
physicist, educator, pioneered the development of nuclear
energy, led to the first demonstration in the nation of
the large release of energy in the fission of uranium by
slow neutron bombardment, a distinguished dean of the School
of Engineering at Columbia University, elected to the National
