Stephen E. Epler

(1909-1997) lived at Chester, Thayer County, and in Lincoln and Beatrice. Educator, college administrator, pioneered six-man football in 1934, which was adopted by small public and private schools nationwide; founder of Portland State University in 1946, served as top administrator of three community colleges.
