Fred R. Fairchild

(1877-1966) born at Crete, Saline County. Educator and economist, author of several books and published reports in field of public finance, including a proposal to U.S. Treasury Department in 1939 that there be no increase in Federal taxes as long as budget was unbalanced, was co-author of popular text Elementary Economics (1926) that ran through five editions until 1950s; as consultant to Congressional committees in 1930s, he advised against doctrine that Government spending promotes prosperity.
