Grace Abbott
(1878-1939) born in Grand Island.
Educator, scholar, author, social reformer, head of U.S.
Children's Bureau, published numerous books and articles
on the subjects of social work and immigration problems,
was named in 1931 in a national magazine poll as one of
America's twelve most notable women for her efforts against
infant and maternity mortality, child labor, and juvenile
