George E. Howard

(1849-1928) lived in Lincoln. Educator, sociologist, historian, known for advocating educational equality for men and women, and for urging the importance of history for intellectuals, and the application of science to the improvement of social life, was the first professor of history at the University of Nebraska in 1879 and one of the founders of the Nebraska State Historical Society, was among the original professors to organize the history department at Stanford University, his three-volume work on marriage and divorce in 1904 earned him an international reputation.
