Gilbert M. Hitchcock
(1859-1934) born in Omaha. Lawyer, publisher,
politician, founded the Omaha World Herald in 1885 and
1889 with a global perspective, served three terms in U.S.
Congress and two terms in U.S. Senate; as acting Democratic
minority leader he led the Wilson Administration's efforts
after World War I to obtain senatorial confirmation of
the Treaty of Versailles, including the League of Nations,
was chairman of resolutions committee at 1932 Democratic
