Clarence F. Korstian
(1889-1968) born near Crete, Saline County. Educator,
forest ecologist, became early leader in development of
forestry in North Carolina as well as the nation, served
as first director of Duke Forest in 1930 and was first
dean of Duke University graduate school of forestry from
1938 to 1957, fostered interdisciplinary study, authored
and co-authored books and many articles, and served in
editorial capacity for ecology journals almost 30 years.
