James R. Murie
(1862-1921) born at Grand Island. Educator, farmer,
anthropologist, devoted 30 years to the collection of information
on the Pawnee Indian culture, contributed data to major institutions,
including the American Museum of Natural history and the Bureau
of American Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution; published
a comprehensive study of Pawnee ceremonialism, and assisted
distinguished scholars in their publication of several books
