Maurice Pate
(1894-1965) born in Pender, Thurston
County. Businessman, first executive director of the United
Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF)
which he helped to establish; refused in 1960 to allow
his nomination for the Nobel Prize, an honor, he said,
that belonged to UNICEF, not to an individual; UNICEF received
Nobel Prize for peace in 1965. Consult New Yorker, December
