Harry C. Solomon
(1889-1982) born at Hastings. Psychiatrist,
educator, considered pioneer in deinstitutionalization
of mentally ill patients and humanizing treatment by elminating
such practices as continuous restraints and overmedication
as early as 1943 when he became head of the Massachusetts
Mental Health Center; as commissioner of mental health
for Massachusetts from 1959 to 1968 he implemented program
changes to facilitate patient rehabilitation which have
since been adopted in various forms nationwide; previously
was at Harvard University, authored several articles in
medical journals, and co-authored or edited six books.
