Thomas J. Morgan
(1839-1902) lived at Brownville and Peru, Nemaha County.
Military officer, educator, administrator, was U.S. Commissioner
of Indian Affairs from 1889 to 1893 where he outlined policies
to promote the welfare, citizenship, and education of Native
Americans, then was corresponding secretary of American Baptist
Home Mission Society for nine years where he helped establish
schools for thousands of African Americans; previously achieved
rank of brigadier general during Civil War, and served after
1872 as educational leader at colleges in four different
