Herbert D. Welte
(1898-1986) born at David City, Butler County, and lived
at Kearney. Educator, administrator, served as president
of Central Connecticut State University from 1929 to 1968
when the campus grew from two buildings to twenty, from 286
female students to over 9,000 coeds, from 18 teachers to
582 faculty members, and when the institution experienced
changes in names, standards, curriculum, and preparation
for university status in 1983. Consult obituaries in New
